Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is more often helping them to learn rather than teaching them.
John Whitmore
One of the questions Every Moment Matters keeps pressing on is this: How do I coach?
That question matters because it pushes us to look beyond what we teach and examine how we actually lead. Two coaches can know the same game, teach the same skills, and run the same drills, yet create very different environments for their players. That is why this question is worth slowing down and thinking about. 👀
One of the reminders that stood out to me in this part of the book is that great coaches never stop learning.
They keep refining their craft, searching for ideas, and looking both inside and outside their sport for insights they can apply to their own teams. Good coaches stay curious. They keep growing. They keep paying attention. 📘
Coaching Is Both Science and Art 🎨
One thing I really liked in this section is the reminder that coaching is not just a science to be mastered. It is also an art.
That matters because coaching is not just about gathering information. It is about knowing how to take good ideas, shape them, and apply them in a way that fits your own people, your own purpose, and your own program. Coaches should absolutely learn from others, but they should not simply copy. They should take what is true and useful, then shape it in a way that fits the team God has placed in front of them. 🎯
Be Authentic, but Keep Growing 🌱
Another strong takeaway is that coaches need to be authentically themselves. Players can usually tell when a coach is forcing a style that is not really his.
But authenticity should not be rooted in ignorance or resistance to growth.
It should be grounded in curiosity, learning, and adaptability.
A coach should be firm in his principles, because those reflect who he really is, but flexible in his methods, because the game is always evolving and coaches must keep evolving with it.
That balance matters. Good coaches do not drift all over the place, but they also do not get stuck. They lead with conviction and keep learning with humility. 🤝
Watch What Is Happening Right in Front of You 😊
One more thing that really stood out to me is that coaches need to pay attention to what is happening right in front of them every day.
- Are players learning?
- Are they engaged?
- Are they enjoying the process?
Those are not small questions. When athletes are fully engaged, smiling, and growing at the same time, that is often a strong sign that the environment is healthy. That does not mean every practice is easy, but it does mean there should be life in the gym. There should be energy, ownership, and growth. 🔥
That is the kind of environment coaches should be working to create.
How We Coach Matters 🧭
This part of Every Moment Matters is a strong reminder that how we coach really matters.
👉 It matters that we keep learning.
👉 It matters that we stay rooted in our principles while remaining flexible in our methods.
👉 And it matters that we pay attention to whether our players are actually learning and enjoying the process.
As coaches, we are not just trying to run better practices or install better systems. We are trying to create environments where athletes can grow, compete, learn, and thrive.
Scripture speaks well to that posture: A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels Prov. 1:5. Good coaches do not stop learning. They keep listening, keep growing, and keep seeking wisdom so they can better serve the athletes they lead. 🙏
